Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeships

The Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship (PGTA) is a Government funded work-based training programme for people who already hold an undergraduate degree and meet the ITT criteria.

As a Postgraduate Teacher Apprentice you’ll earn a salary as part of your professional training as you work towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and your Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA) qualification.

You’ll be based in your school for the duration of your apprenticeship, spending at least four days per week in the classroom.

Like all apprentices, you’ll attend weekly central-based sessions with KMT and receive support from KMT and your school-based mentor to integrate your learning into practice.

Why choose a Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship?

Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships with KMT are available for prospective primary and secondary school teachers.

You’ll be employed by a KMT partner school while you learn on the job. In some cases, this may be a school you’re already working at, or have an existing relationship with.

If you’re currently working as an unqualified teacher or teaching assistant, it offers new opportunities for career progression, plus higher earning capacity, recognition, and status.

You’ll receive a combination of classroom teaching and off-the-job training as you to work towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

On completion of your Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship you may choose to top up your training to complete a PGCE.

What's involved with a PGTA?

Teacher apprentices can be employed in a variety of settings (for example academy schools, maintained schools, independent schools and SEND schools)

Duration: 15 months (12 Months to QTS + 3 Months EPA)

Entry Requirements

GCSE Maths & English at grade C/4 (or equivalent), grade C/4 in a science subject (if training to teach pupils aged 5-11), and a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).

Applicants without GCSEs can complete equivalency tests.
