Routes
into teaching
With KMT you have 4 main routes into teaching.
Each of them involve closely training in one school (your Home School) and gaining teaching experience in a contrasting/alternative setting.
School Direct Route
Non-Salaried
- Cost – £7,495
- Duration – 1 year
- Funding – Some subjects give you access to a bursary Maths, Computing Chemistry, Biology, Physics, MFL, Classics, DT and Geography) – Student Loans are available through Student Finance England, click here for more information
School Direct Route
Salaried
- Cost – £7,495
- Duration – 1 year
- If you already have teaching experience or you worked 3 years after gaining your degree, you can be employed by a school as an unqualified teacher and receive full training at the same time
Part Time
- Total cost for duration: £9,435
- £6,935 for Year 1 (6 half terms) and £2500 for Year 2 (2 half terms).
- Duration 16 months

- This route covers all subjects and phases and suits those looking to gain QTS alongside having other commitments
Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship (PGTA)
- Government funded work-based training programme for people who already hold an undergraduate degree and meet the ITT criteria
- Suitable for all subjects and phases
- Duration: 15 months (12 Months to QTS + 3 Months End Point Assessment (EPA)
- During the first 12 months of the apprenticeship, Teacher Apprentices are paid on at least Point 1 of the Unqualified Teacher scale
The Professional
Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
Regardless the route you are choosing, you have the opportunity to study for a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Leeds Beckett University. This is a Level 7 qualifications with 60 Masters credits. This is a distance learning course that can be done alongside your training with KMT, or in your ECT1 or ECT2 year.
Assessment Only Route
The Assessment Only (AO) route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) allows you to demonstrate that you already meet all the Teaching Standards, without the need for any further training.
You’ll need to present detailed evidence of your teaching and be assessed in school. The whole process takes under 12 weeks, often without leaving your current school.
